Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Unemployment rate is high throughout the country, and Masatepe’s unemployment rate is just below the average. Poverty is widespread, especially in the more rural areas. The vast majority of the population here in Masatepe professes Catholicism or Evangelical Christianity, with over 30 churches established within the town’s limits. Yet, we believe the holistic Gospel includes more than what has been experienced here so far. We believe that the Jesus of the Bible cares about the poor and oppressed; in Masatepe there is still a ways to go to see holistic transformation within the community.
As a result of the socialistic structure of healthcare in Nicaragua, everyone in Masatepe has free access to health facilities. However, for families with tight finances, it is difficult to see the doctor and afford the prescribed treatment. While the government may intend to provide free medical care to all of its citizens, they simply do not have the financial means to provide quality medical care to everyone.
We are looking for someone who would works alongside the Centro de Salud to help promote better health care practices, as well as working with Medical Mission teams to bring supplies and training to locals. They will volunteer with local hospitals and health centers, help develop new partnerships in the community, and assist the Short Term Medical Missions teams.
